"Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical, and expecting more than others think is possible."
Freshman Students Coast on Their Environmental Field Trip!

On Wednesday 11/15/06 the freshman and sophomore biology classes of Thersa Nishite and Kenton Wong went to Waimanalo Bay, otherwise know as Sherwood Beach. They were met there by Pauline and Amber from the Nature Conservancy. She briefed them on the days activities and learning objectives.

Students got into small groups and proceeded to learn about the plants and animals at the beach park. These groups then became learning stations for the other students to follow.
  • Justine V, Tyler, and Ren learned about the offshore wildlife sanctuaries around the main Hawaiian Islands.
  • Lindsey, Krystle, Justine H, and Amber discussed ghost crabs and other organisms that inhabit the beach.
  • Jamie, Klyie, and Kristen talked about the various forms of trash and marine debris.

After all groups rotated through the learning stations, the class decided to find out what kinds of trash was on the beach. After 10 minutes of picking up trash on the beach, students were able to see how much trash is really out there. They had gathered a garbage bag full of everything from rope, lighters, to styrofoam.
