COMMUNITY AND STUDENT POPULATION

Moanalua High School is a public high school in Honolulu, Hawaii, which was established in September, 1972 and which graduated its first class in May, 1975.

It is located on the fringe of metropolitan Honolulu on the rim of Salt Lake crater and is bordered by Moanalua Gardens and Moanalua Valley, Tripler Army Hospital, the Aliamanu Military Reservation, Salt Lake crater and its environs, the Mapunapuna business area, and Keehi Lagoon and Honolulu International Airport.  It presently serves 1900 students in grades 9-12 on a campus of 30 acres.

The high school is fed by five feeder schools—Moanalua Elementary, Red Hill Elementary, Shafter Elementary, Salt Lake Elementary, and Moanalua Middle School.  Moanalua Elementary, Red Hill Elementary, and Shafter Elementary have large populations of students representing Tripler Army Hospital, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Ft. Shafter Army base respectively.  Salt Lake Elementary has a large immigrant student population fed by the surrounding high rise condominiums.

The population at the high school includes:  Hispanic (2.8%); African American (5.5%); Chinese (7.7%); Samoan (1.8%), Hawaiian (.9%), Part-Hawaiian (6.9%); Korean (7%),  Indo-Chinese (1%); Japanese (15.5%); Caucasian (19.4%); and Filipino (19.5%).  These students come from diverse families that span the economic spectrum.  Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy personnel dependents comprise about 21.4% of the student body.   Additionally, 11.5% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch and the following percentage of students are serviced by the following programs:   Special Education, 8.3%;  Section 504, 2%;  ESLL, 9.1%; CSAP, 7.9%.

Our student population has fluctuated slightly but has remained stable over the past few years.  The chart below shows recent September enrollment figures.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Moanalua High School utilizes a multitude of tools to measure student achievement and learning.   Below is a list of such assessments and a brief description of each.

Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT)

The SAT is a logic based college entrance exam which measures numeric and verbal reasoning skills.   The test is taken by college bound students beginning in their junior year and may be retaken during their senior year.   The scoring ranges from a low of 200 to a high score of 800.  Cost:  Approximately $24.00

American College Testing Exam (ACT)

The ACT is a college entrance exam which measures classroom achievement in various subject areas.   The test is taken by college bound students beginning in their junior year and may be retaken during their senior year.   The scoring on this assessment ranges from a low of 10 to a high of 35. Cost:  Approximately $22.00

PSAT

The PSAT exam is a practice exam for the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT).   The test is taken by college bound students beginning as early as in their freshmen year and may be retaken.   It is important to note that the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program uses PSAT scores achieved in a student’s junior year.   The scoring range for the PSAT ranges from a low of 10 to a high of 80.  Cost:  Approximately $11.50

ACT PLAN Exam

The PLAN exam is a practice test for the ACT test.   AT Moanalua High School the test is taken by all sophomores.   The results help predict what a student may score on the ACT test.    The scoring ranges from a low of 10 to a high of 35.  Cost:  Approximately $7.00 – but is paid by the school.

Advanced Placement (A.P.) Exams

Advanced Placement tests are taken at the end of each A.P. course (college level course) and measure student mastery of the specific college level curriculum covered by the course.  The scoring on AP tests range from a low of 1 to a high of 5.   Students that achieve a passing score ranging from 3 to 5 demonstrate that they are “competent”, “more competent”, or “very competent.”

Stanford Achievement Test –

The Stanford Achievement Test is a norm referenced test that administered statewide for students in grades 3, 6, 8, and 10.   Recent administration of the test has been used to measure reading and math abilities for students.
