Media Communications Learning Center -- Imagining the Future
Mrs S: "Hi Jane...sorry for the miscommunication today...did you go to G201 at lunch?" Cheryl: "hi" Mrs S: "We had to move the meeting because Ms. Harada and I were in a workshop in the SCMR" Jane: "ahh i'm sorry mrs. sueoka" Cheryl: "ok" Cheryl: "so" Jane: "i got tied up....getting a chick and setting up for japanese class" Cheryl: "then it's cancelled" Jane: "what's cancelled?" Mrs S: "okie dokes...we're even then :)" Shinji: "hello" Jane: "hi shinji" Mrs S: "Hi Cheryl and Shinji" Cheryl: "Ms. S everytime i upload it doesn't come up am i doing something wrong?" Shinji: "it seems my computer is a bit slow" Mrs S: "I'm trying to copy paste...if someone else can do it as a backup, that would be good too :)" Mrs S: "It should upload automatically" Shinji: "so please understand if it seems like i am ignoring your questions" Cheryl: "the pics don't show" Mrs S: "and if I look like I'm ignoring, it's that I'm copy pasting ;>" Mrs S: "sorry Cheryl I thought you meant the chat...will check the pics" Jane: "my computer won't let me copy paste" Mrs S: "for some reason you have to be in the "html chat" rather than the java for the copy paste to work" Shinji: "does anyone have an open phone line with which they can call Raymond and Melanie?" Jane: "yeah i can call them" Mrs S: "good idea Shinji and Jane :)" Cheryl: "i can" Jane: "melanie's probably signing on soon because her line's busy" artease enters. Jane: "ditto for raymond" Jane: "hey melanie!" Shinji: "Hi Melanie" Shinji: "so no one is picking up Raymond's phone?" Mrs S: "okay!!! :) just dino more :)" Jane: "sorry guys....ill be right back....gotta put something away" Jane: "Raymond's line is busy" Melanie: "hey! sorry i'm late" Shinji: "where should we start?" Melanie: "raymond said he'll be late" Jane: "Ok....i'm back...sorry" Mrs S: "hmmm...when we've done team chats before, someone volunteers to be "facilitator"..." Cheryl: "um sorry guys pic on the page won't show up" Shinji: "hold on, let me get a dictionary" Jane: "Dictionary?" Melanie: "facillitator?" Cheryl: "haha okay i got a flash up on the page if you want to see it" Mrs S: "*chuckle* you guide the meeting...move things along..." Jane: "lol is that why shinji got a dictionary?" Mrs S: "That's really cute Cheryl :)" Melanie: "so, how's the research going guys?" Jane: "I've got a lot of info on music and the brain" Shinji: "pretty good" Mrs S: "hmm...would it help to post those research deals to the forum?" Jane: "Seems to be that UC-Irvine is the "hot spot" for new information on relationships between music and neuroscience" Shinji: "Mrs. Sueoka, the links you gave us about the brain and music were really good. Thanks" Cheryl: "ok so....um...post it on the forum.....i'm going crazy too much windows are open" Shinji: "I haven't had time to read everything, but what I did read offered a lot more insight on music and the brain" Mrs S: "great...and if UC Irvine's the hot spot, that's where we should focus on as Dr. Sadagic gets connections for us :)" Jane: "I'll send a summary of my research or the more vital parts to it i guess....because right now there's more than 30 pages of research..." Mrs S: "heheh...good idea Jane :) and didja see? Trail Mix got a response in less than 2 days on their requests :)" Melanie: "wow jane!" Jane: "Yes! :) There are three doctor's names who keep popping up throughout all the research so hopefully we can get anyone who is knowledgeable about their developments" Mrs S: "great! we should compile a list and send it asap...then you can send another if you find more names" Mrs S: "besides the names, TM sent some specs on the kinds of assistance they needed" Jane: "I'm not really sure how to define areas of research especially with the whole music--brain thing....but i can try" Mrs S: "yups...Dr. S inlcludes your proposal with her request...she also explains the ITF project and says some really nice things about MOHS too :) then she mails it off :)" Mrs S: "so...who's facilitating?" Jane: "good question" Jane: "who's awake? hehe" Melanie: "waht's facilitating mean?" Shinji: "I'm just reading" Shinji: "my turn to interject" Melanie: "sorry too lazy to get a dictionary" Mrs S: "my TQJrs were fond of answering questions like that with ZZZzzzzzzz ;>" Jane: "Facilitating is just like leading discussion" Shinji: "waiting for my turn to interject" Melanie: "oooo, thanks jane" Jane: "np melanie :)" Shinji: "Ok, so we can name any institution and person, and Dr. S will try and get a hold of them?" Mrs S: "yups...and she gets results too :)" Mrs S: "even though they sometimes decline, at least they reply promptly" Shinji: "ok, about the music research..." Shinji: "I was reading some stuff about how music and moods and it seems (sorry Melanie) that music has a much greater impact on mood than art" Jane: "lol uh oh war within the group" Jane: "hello raymond!!" Melanie: "how was the math problem raymond? lol" Raymond: "hello.diplodoci reporting in." Raymond: "gary says hi." Jane: "lol gary's so funny" Cheryl: "hi gary/raymond :)" Raymond: "you know, a good seat on the toilet really get my brain going I was able to solve the math problem." Jane: "hahaha" Raymond: "where is everybody else?" Shinji: "In fact, it is pretty surprising how much influence music really has on us. Everyone knows that music can put us in different emotional states, but there was also an experiment in which people tried to memorize different words to different tunes." Melanie: "it's okay shinji, maybe in some cases it's true about the music thing" Mrs S: "to raymond...in the bathroom...pondering ;>" Melanie: "were they successful?" Jane: "and what was the result of that experiment shinji?" Shinji: "It turns out that when people where listining to music with a positive feel, they remambered the words that also had a positive meaning" Shinji: "and vice versa" Jane: "ahh cool" Mrs S: "ah...so one had to reinforce the other..." Shinji: "there was also an experiment with art and music" Mrs S: "that's a combination of music and langauge then" Cheryl: "raymond can you send me your flash" Jane: "well you know how we were discussing how these "universal languages" could help reopen or trigger "new doors" to learning especially for older people?" Raymond: "how?" Shinji: "experts determined if an artwork was negative or positive, and then displayed it to viewers with music. It turns out that the type of music played had more of an influence than what the piece of art was categorized as" Jane: "i read this thing....and it said that in this experiment it showed that music therapy changed brain activation and promoted language recovery after brain damage" Cheryl: "aim?" Raymond: "sorry. don't have aim." Cheryl: "msn?" Raymond: "nope." Cheryl: "do you have any messengers?" Raymond: "nope." Melanie: "lol" Jane: "also another study showed that EVERYBODY has inborn musical talent....no matter how undeveloped it may be the brain still reacts to chords and stuff" Jane: "infants develop musical preferences at AGE 2" sefseven leaves. Jane: "oh no....shinji's computer must have kicked him out" sefseven enters. Raymond: "Yeah. All learning occurs pretty much at an early age, so when we finally get to school, we will be somewhat limited in what we can learn." Shinji: "(sorry, my computer went a little haywire on me)" Shinji: "actually, that may not be the case" Mrs S: "so your site will be "learning UNlimited" ;>" Cheryl: "try look at the site i added a brain" Raymond: "sorry. my computer went a little haywire on me." Shinji: "in one of the articles, it says that the nueron circuits are not closed off, contrary to what popular news articles say" Shinji: "I don't really know how much truth is in that statment however, since the article seems kind of vague about it's point" Mrs S: "maybe you might be able to test via your website :)" Raymond: "That article doesn't sound correct. Something must be closed off." Raymond: "Do you guys know something about the attractos in fractals and chaos theory? Lorenz attractors or something like that?" Shinji: "But anyway, back to that topic about music and how it helps us to learn, this certainly ties in with our revised topic of how our different subjects help each other out" Melanie: "if we're putting pictures on our site, it has to be our own right?" Jane: "WHOA different subjects all at once" Jane: "3 topics going on right now" Raymond: "In an article i read this guy was trying to prove how the brain can be explained through chaos theory, and how it might actually work through chaos." Cheryl: "not really mel" Raymond: "Remember the swirly thingys sefseven showed us int he flash demos?" Raymond: "and how they somehow revolved certain things and points?" Melanie: "thanks cheryl" Jane: "BRB" Shinji: "in response to Raymond...the article did give an example of a music group called the New Horizons Band that consists of adults ages 60-85, many of which never had previous music lessons. And they have had success with their performances" Raymond: "some say that neurons are kind of like that. When we learn something, and it is repeated, the neurons will forge pathways and such that will revolve around those important ideas" Raymond: "That's how we learn stuff, or at least retain. If it's not important, then it just disappears." Mrs S: "hmm...and how do they determine "important"?" Melanie: "I was just wondering, that's all" Raymond: "I guess it depends on you." Raymond: "I say that math is important. artease says its art. sefseven says its music." Shinji: "(dang, my computer is so slow...can't wait to get roadrunner)" Mrs S: "hmm...so maybe the pathways are influenced by the emotion/attachment to certain ideas?" Raymond: "Hey, did you guys get my email on the food for thought?" Jane: "yup" Jane: "interesting information raymond" Shinji: "very" Raymond: "I think so. Actually, there's an article I want to read about learning through emotion. And math." Raymond: "It's listed in my research bibliography, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Ms. Sueoka kicked me out at 4 today." Jane: "haha" Jane: "is your research posted?" Raymond: "No. Not yet." Mrs S: "heheh...tomorrow you guys can stay until 5 :)" Jane: "oh ok...just wondering" Raymond: "I also found some other things about the diffences between male and female brains." Melanie: "since we're all here, are we going to set more meeting dates?" Mrs S: "uh oh...treading on dangerous ground there..." Jane: "lol besides the fact that females are better?" Mrs S: "good idea Melanie..." Jane: "yes good idea :)" Raymond: "Wait. Need to check something first. That's 1..2..3..4...4 to 2." Shinji: "(Umm, this really isn't working. My computer keeps on stalling whenever someone sends something, or I send something, like right now. If I don't post again, it means this message screwed me over)" Jane: "lol raymond" Raymond: "noooo...........sefseven come back! I need your backup before I launch into my findings...." Jane: "4 to 1" Raymond: "Actually, I found some information and a joke about it, too." Jane: "hehe go ahead" Jane: "ooooh....shinji's message did "screw him over"" Raymond: "Information first. Well, our brain is divided into two sections. This has to do with something called......sefseven, where're you" Jane: "lol....you're alone in this....keep going raymond.....awwww shinji's back...hehe ok but its still 3 to 2" Shinji: "ok, my screen is totally blank, there is just this box to type in my last few words. Hopefully you guys get this. I gotta go, my computer doesn't want to...Hey, the screen is back!!! Okay, before it blanks out again...like right now..just want to say by" Raymond: "sorry. got booted off. Who's doing that?" Mrs S: "ookay...check for the log...I'll post it asap :)" Raymond: "have to go, sefseven?" Jane: "ok finish raymond" Shinji: "well, I was, but now it seems like my computer is working pretty fine" Raymond: "well, I'll continue. Our two halves deals with something called lateralization" Shinji: "(I hate my connection)" Jane: "nope it is not" Mrs S: "hi guys...my computer rebooted...first time that's ever happen" Mrs S: "was anyone logging?" Raymond: "i know. i was thinking the same thing." Cheryl: "nope so not true" Mrs S: "I'm on our second computer and connection but will go back to the one with the saved log once it's done w/scandisk" Jane: "maybe its the guy ego that makes them so confident....while girls are more modest :) and tend to underestimate their skill in an attempt to look er modest" Raymond: "anyway, they think that girls might have a harder time on math because they have stronger bilateral thingys." Melanie: "haha, know what I was thinking, Raymond's the only guy left..." Cheryl: "brb........taking out ther garbage" Jane: "lol" Jane: "corner him" Raymond: "I interpretted that as meaning girls even out their strengths over the two hemispheres of the brain." Log interrupted here when my computer rebooted Raymond: "Hey, watch it. I fight back." Jane: "so the these "bilateral thingys" affect math skill? do u know if they affect anything else?" Jane: "haha" Raymond: "Men, on the other hand, have stronger lateral specialization, or something like that, meaning they develop one side more than the other, making certain things stronger." Jane: "yeah i guess i can see that" Melanie: "but i think that sometimes its better to be balanced" Jane: "ooh we should plan our next meeting before anyone else leaves" Raymond: "good idea. when are you guys free this week?" Jane: "but being specialized brings about greater and stronger achievements in that specialized area right?" Raymond: "Yes. Meaning we men bring home Nobel prizes and such." Jane: "lol" Raymond: "there's a joke about a male brain and female brain." Jane: "dont worry we women will create a secret super master plan to let boys work hard only to result in women conquering the world :)" Jane: "((did u guys want to meet afterschool or lunch....??)) im not so sure chat works out too well because shinji's connection is not too great" Raymond: "If by conquering the world you mean making us breakfast and cleaning our homes, then I think you're right.:)" Melanie: "mine sucks too" Jane: "ahhhhhhhhhhhhh hahaha" Mrs S: "chat might be safer for Raymond though ;>" Melanie: "too slow" Jane: "well in MY house.....husband will have dinner ready when i come home....." Jane: "will clean dishes.....and will massage my stinky feet after that" Cheryl: "ok i'm back" Raymond: "No comment." Jane: "i dont think a guy like that exists :)" Cheryl: "omg...what a thing to see" Raymond: "Yeah. You'll have to settle for a dog." Jane: "lol....dog men same no?" Jane: "j/k :)" Raymond: "OK where were we........." Jane: "sorry....afterschool or lunch meeting?" Melanie: "see what i mean?" Raymond: "Afterschool sounds better." Jane: "ok" Jane: "what days are good?" Mrs S: "I think Ms Harada is here Mon, Wed, Thurs?" Raymond: "Well, any day except Monday and Thursday is good. Howwever, after Latin I don't have to go home yet, and will be able to meet." Mrs S: "I can keep the room open until 5 on Wed...and 4 on Thurs" Raymond: "Melanie has to go to Math Team on Tuesday and Thursday and Friday, though." Jane: "hehe so wednesday?" Melanie: "wed not good for cheryl" Jane: "ahhhhhhh oh yeah" Melanie: "tuesday?" Cheryl: "very...this is so compkicated" Mrs S: "looks like it...this Wed, Geeks will be in G201...but you guys can meet there together" Raymond: "hmmm.....good chance to scope out the competition..." Jane: "hehe" |
