Greetings from Hawaii to all the rest of the ITF Teams and Staff out there in cyberspace!
Here are some quick introductions, taken in MPEG format by Mr. Hale at our first team meeting
- Alicia Crampton
Alicia:VR, Teleimmersion, and Space/Ocean exploration
Reflecting on the enduring knowledge I agree that the enduring isn't
necessarily the facts but feelings, ideas, and thought processes.
Curiosity, awareness are things that can not be seen or physically done
untill they are expressed on art, music, etc. I would like to be able to
see us as a group overall make these feelings into an enduring knowledge
to be taught to others.
- Cheryl Enokawa
Cheryl: Ok, well I'm really interested in doing teleimmersion and VR. I want to do
something with both of these things and create a really exciting twist to
them. Um....ok...You know add a little bit of music, art,
science....etc...
Oh and like Alicia said, it's really important how we teach/present the
whole "enduring knowledge" idea because it's the main concept of
everything that we're doing.
- Daniel Bumanglag
Daniel: Well, for the group-forming thing, i'm really interested in tele-immersion
and simulations and convergence of technologies. I'm really interested in
Jane's idea of tying in an enduring knowledge that could work and/or deal with
creativity and the arts. ;)
- Hyun Hee Chong
- Jane Chung
Jane: The Virtual Reality Videoconferencing System,
Tele-Immersion are two killer apps that I know I am
interested in. I would also like to possibly tie in
an enduring knowledge that deals with the creativity
and the arts (music, art, etc.).
- Lance Sugiyama
- Melanie Li
Melanie: My enduring knowledge is art, especially visual arts, and everything
that goes with it, such as visual learning, imagination, creativity, etc.
I think that art is very important because it represents ideas and
thoughts. You can use art to express your feelings and to get a point
across. Sometimes, it can be an escape from stress that comes with too
much thinking. Also, art is a very flexible thing. It can come in the form
of a song, music, a drawing, a sculpture, or a piece of clothing. It's
like a wad of clay..you can mold it into whatever shape you want. In
history, science, and math you have to memorize dates and facts and use
the correct formulas in order to get the right answers...but in art, you
have a wide range of media to work with. If I don't want to draw in
pencil, I can use charcoal, pastels, paints, ink...and if I don't want to
draw, then I can do a sculpture, a blockprint, a tile...It's pretty much
Like everyone else, tele-immersion and VR are the major technological
interests for me. I am also interested in 3D graphics. I think that it'd
be great if people from all over the world can collaborate virtually on a
piece of artwork, maybe a mural, which can express the ideas and feelings
of the people worldwide.
- Brianne Hill & Nita Gojani
BriAnne: space, science, robotics
cotinuing on my first message I agree with alica that it is not just the
ideas that are thught its on how they are tought. An example of this my
be say in an englis class they read a play there could be many possible
ways to make the kids understand like having them do parts in front of the
class insted of just asking them questions about it.
Nita: As far as the enduring knowledge, I agree with Alicia, it does not have to
do only with facts but also with feelings.
As for my interest in killer apps, I am interested in medicine, so
whatever has to so with medicine :), but I didn't notice that anybody else
is interested in that, and medicine is just a certain field, and it's
probably the best if we concentrate in a more general matter. So I guess
I'd like to work with something like teleimmersion and VR. If these two
become available to the general public, learning would be much more fun
and much more easy. Just imagine that you can stay in bed and using
teleimmersion still be in your virtual classroom!
- Dustin Koch & Jackie Beierly
Jackie: Well my interests are science kind of stuff. I am not really sure what to say
cause I like to do anything as long as I am enjoying it with my group and my
group is having fun also. Well then sorry this is going to short but my mom
has to use the computer (our other computer has a virus, so we have only one
:( ) well then cant wait to see you all again!!! Jaci
Dustin: 4 the interest part of the HW, I am interested in history, geography,
music and I can readilly get interested to the point of insanity about
alot of stuff, so, unless I am totalyy, utterly and compleatly not
interested and resistant about the topic, I can do pretty well with just
about any one.
As 4 groups, I think that there is at least ONE group that I know has
already been formed, the Greek Geeks. I don't know if Raymond is still in
with us, buit he may be 2 cool 4 us. (j/k) but ya.
ummm I have been alittle out of the loop 4 a while so if n-e-body thinks
that there is something that I absolutly need to know about, than let me
know, ok? ok.
I G2G, C-U-L8TER... Flowin SideWayys
- Shinji Fujioka & Raymond Liu
Raymond: My enduring knowledge area would be mathematics and all of its
applications. Using virtual reality, tele-immersion and other interactive
systems, we can teach the concepts of math more effectively. I'm also
interested in combining math with other areas such as music and art. Both
art and music can be described and interpreted mathematically -- music, I
think can be described as specific frequencies while art can be described
by geometric shapes and curves and possibly chaos theory (interesting!).
Shinji said something to me about the golden rectangle, which is a great
example of art and math. I think it would be very interesting if we can
use virtual reality and such to explore things like chaos theory and
nature. Math is one of the basic "enduring knowledge" thingys out there,
and is considered by some as the universal language (kinda like music).
The new technology can help teach difficult subjects such as calculus and
probability and elucidate its applications in the real world, hopefully
drawing more interest to a "boring subject."
Shinji Fujioka: The topic I am most interested in is music. This also ties in with art
and math as everyone else has said, but music has a whole different life
to it. It's interesting how different kinds of music can evoke different
kinds of emotions. I want to take a look at the creative side of music
(the art side) and the technical side (the math side). I'm still not sure
how to tie it in with enduring knowledge, but I'm sure it can be done.
- Lorraine Pascual & Maureen Ditol
Maureen: Art and music is an enduring knowledge that everyone can relate to. Even if
we are just observers and not creators, [I can only draw stick people...:)]
we learn from these mediums and everything related to it. Almost every
subject can be found. Math goes into music as well as reading. History
(which I'm very interested in) can be depicted in art and music. Lessons are
taught in a unique and in an untraditional way which then gets more people
interested in it.
And all the killer apps that the group has been talking about can be used
for these two subjects. Different countries can interact but they might not
be able to understand each other's languages. Art can bring them.
Tele-immersion can help if the only way to show/explain something was
through visuals or sounds. I consider communication to be extremely
important.
I also think the ideas about having science as an enduring knowledge is
really great. I'm interested in that too, but science just doesn't come that
naturally.
Maureen
p.s. I hope that made sense ---^ Even though I'm interested in
communication, I have a hard time explaining myself... :D
Lorraine: Imaginers!
EEk! Sorry this is late everyone. Anyway, I think I have the same
interests as Melanie and Jane, and all the other people who are interested
in the creativity stuff: arts, music, clothing, self-expression type of
things. To me, this is enduring knowledge. The part that I'm especially
interested in is the music aspect. I dunno, is this even sticking with the
subject? Virtual Reality is also something that I could get into. I dunno
about the tele-immersion stuff though, that's kind of too technical for me,
and I'm not really a techie. Anyway, someone email me if the read this.
You know, so I could get some feedback?
Lorraine the Lipstick
- Cathy Mina
As for my area of interest, I've found virtual reality (along with
tele-immersion) and its possibilities to be an area that i would be
interested in exploring and creating something on. (Though, personally, I
look forward to actually building the website).
