Trip Prep -- BIGTIME!!!

Over the winter break, NowLoading alumnus Gerald Rojo II volunteered to work with our crew on lighting. Gerald has honed his lighting and camera skills (already legend among our MeneMAC crews) with study at the Art Institute of California. A dedicated group of STN delegates gathered in G-201 to learn about barn doors and scrims and "BFLATT," about three point lighting and then some.

Grace and Liz display their talent at being the "talent" in our lighting demo, as Gerald shows the crew how to create halos, bounce light, achieve "rack focus," and more! After the inside lighting session, Gerald took the crew outdoors, where they experimented with our reflector and stand and learned how backlight and windows can work for you! Thanks Gerald, for showing us, first hand, how pictures can truly be worth a thousand words!
November 30/December 1 -- The STN Sweet 16 Simulation

Friday, November 30, 2007: The entire STN delegation (almost) reports to school at 8:00 am...but THEY DON'T GO TO CLASS. Instead, they begin sixteen hours of intense production work, to build stamina, skills, and collaboration for the real thing in LA on January 17. Their focus word, which was given to them at 8:01 am, was L-I-M-I-T-S.

After story conferences amongst the various teams and editors and equipment checks and off-campus passes, the crews headed out at about 10:00 am to gather interviews and footage for their packages.

Of course, it was not all work. Crews took some time off for a bit of improvised karaoke and at one point attempted to test out the very scientific hypothesis that munching Fritos while staring at a computer monitor causes the monitor image to jump...Perhaps we were a bit too relaxed because we did not make deadline this year, finally calling it quits at about 11:30 pm when it became obvious that we would not be able to get the show completed and dubbed out by the midnight deadline.

But we learned a lot. The crew spent time in class later, dissecting the production challenges and problems and figuring out how to overcome these in LA. Some of insights and agreements included:

  1. During competition and conference sessions, we will not use our cell phones except for conference business or parent calls.
  2. We are now more aware of the importance of deadlines and how missed deadlines by individual teams can doom an entire show. So, we will honor deadlines.
  3. We calculated that we spent one hour ordering dinner and then another hour picking it up. So we vowed to be more efficient at mealtimes. Or (like last year's staff) we could forego meals ;>
