What is Overfishing?

Overfishing

Overfishing is when you fish too much of a certain species of fish. It is one of causes of the drop in the fish population.

In ancient Hawaii, to prevent overfishing, the chiefs would forbid fish to be caught during certain months. This allowed the fish to repopulate and give the Hawaiians enough food to eat.

Overfishing today is a very serious problem. In 2003, 14 scientists from different countries found that 29% of fish species had collapsed, which would mean that the catching rate of these fish had gone down 90% from their historic maximum catch levels. If this keeps going, according to the scientists, all the seafood in the world might become extinct by the year 2048.
