Justine
Justine's Poem

Aloha everyone! I’m Justine Aguas. I’m 15 years old. I’m currently a Sophomore at Moanalua High School. I live with my Mom and my sister. I’m full Filipino. I love sports, especially basketball. I don’t like spicy food but I try it anyways. I’m a risk taker and I like new things. Me being in MeneMAC has taught me a lot on filming and making things in Adobe Photoshop.

I believe Coming of Age is the time in your life where u get more responsibilities, more things to get done and more opportunities to pursue. When I think about coming of age it’s not only growing older age-wise but growing older as a person and finding your true self.

Kii
Kii's Poem

Howzit, I'm Kiinani Kalaau. I am a sophomore at Moanalua High School. I'm usually very outgoing and very easy to get along with. I have a big family which consists of my 2 parents, my five sisters, one niece, one dog, and two fish. I don't live in the Moanalua area I live on the other side of the island in 'Ewa Beach. I enjoy spending time with my boyfriend and my best-friends like Justine. I'm Hawaiian, Filipino, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, and Polish.

Coming of age to me is a big step in teenager's life. No matter what it is it always affects you some way or another. To me it also shows how mature you become in a certain time period. It varies through most people depending on the situation.

Chanelle
Chanelle's Poem

Hello. I am named Chanelle Dela Cruz, so my family and friends calls me Chanelle. I have two brothers and 1 sister. Since my mom is full Korean and my dad is full Filipino, that makes me Korean/Filipino. I was born 15 years ago, on April 1st. This year makes me a sophomore at Moanalua High, where I am in the Mene Mac program proudly. Brown is the color I adore, slippers are what I prefer, and Korean/Filipino/Mexican food is what I love to eat.

Currently I have a duck named Burrito, a dog-named Lucky, a cat named Skipper, and a bunch of fishes. I love to watch movies; my favorites are She's the man, Inside Man, and all the Disney Classics (Snow White, Little Mermaid, The Beauty and The Beast, Bambi, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty.

I think that am very lucky to be able to got Moanalua high school because I live out of the district but because of this wonderful program called mene mac it has been my first two years of high school a wonderful experience. I enjoy with my best-friend Ashley Asing.

Coming of age to me is a big step in teenager's life. No matter what it is it always affects you some way or another. To me coming of age shows that you have matured into a young adult.

Ben
Ben's Poem

My name is Benjamin Tran and I am a sophomore at Moanalua High School. Some of the things that I really enjoy doing are making movies, and in addition, I like to go out and play tennis. In a family of NINE people, I don't remember ever having a boring moment when we are all in the same room. I have four brothers, two sisters, and my parents complete the family.

Coming of age to me is a moment that we have a lot of more responsibilities that you know that you can manage. I think that this is "Coming of Age" because I am currently busy with more things that I though wasnâ~@~Yt manageable but I found out that I can manage them all. This includes having a job, being enrolled in school, being apart of the Broadcast Journalism class that is challenging but good for me, and on top of that, I am hoping to join tennis in January when the season starts. No longer am I a kid, I can handle things for myself.

Lawrence
Lawrence's Poem

Hello everyone! I'm Lawrence Leung, and I'm a sophomore at Moanalua High School. I'm usually a responsible person, and I do my best at everything I do. Over the years, I've been learning how to live a more independent life. I do many chores at home, such as cooking the rice (and some other various things that don't usually come out well except for steak maybe), washing/folding/drying/hanging clothes from the laundry, and yes, homework from school.

Although coming of age may be and probably different to different types of people, from my life experiences, my coming of age is picking up responsibility and independence so that as I make the transition to adult life, I will be able to be self-sustainable.

Team 5: Jenny & Andrew
Jenny
Jenny's Poem

Hey hey hey! It's me Jenny! and...I'm a sophomore at Moanalua High School. I'm the type of person who works, works, works, but I also have a lot time for myself.

Coming of age could mean anything to different people. When I said that "I'm the type of person who works, works, works", it does show that I hav ebeen through coming of age. Say what? I think that coming of age means to take in responsibilites and managing them well. For example, a young girl who starts to wash the dishes could mean to her that she is all grown up. See what I'm saying?

Andrew
Andrew's Poem

Hello readers, or someone who came here by accident! I’m Andrew Hignite (Hig-night) and I am currently a sophomore at Moanalua High School (09 you know!). I like going out to watch movies and I like to make my own short movies more, which is the main reason I joined MeneMAC. Being in MeneMAC I learned how to use Photoshop and how to make websites and now those are two more things I enjoy really well. I enjoy bowling (mostly because there are no characteristics that make someone have a higher advantage than someone else, it’s all even).

I believe that I partly met coming of age because when I read the definition of coming of age, it says that it is a point in someone’s life where they reached maturity and I think I am much more mature than I was before, but there is still much more maturing I need to do.

Laurel
Laurel's Poem

Konichiwa and Aloha! :] My name is Laurel and I'm currently a sophomore as part of the proud, the great, Moanalua Menes. I enjoy sleeping, going on the computer, softball and volleyball. I also enjoy going to church and hanging out with my friends. "Coming of Age" has been a lifelong experience for me, although I'm still dependent on my parents, I don't consider that a part of coming of age because I think that's just the materialistic factors. For me, coming of age is finding myself in spite of all the peer pressure, expectations, and media influences on me- I consider it to be finding who you are and what you're comfortable with, above all of the things around you.

Ashley
Ashley's Poem

Aloha. My name is Ashley Asing. I have a brother. I'm 15 years old and attend Moanalua High School. I play volleyball for my schools Junior Varsity team and we are the OIA Eastern Division Champions!!! I'm not power lifting for our school. I'm very outgoing and love to stay active, on my free time I like to play beach volleyball and surf. When I graduate I want to play volleyball and be a guidance counselor. I think my best characteristics is my aloha spirit, I take it with me everywhere I go.

I think Coming of Age is important in your life because there are times when we all feel we need to "grow up" I'm glad I have experienced this and playing volleyball and getting involved is the first steps into my future..

Katreina
Katreina's Poem

Hello, my name is Katreina Gamil. I’m a sophomore at Moanalua High School. I’m Filipino, born and raised in Oahu. My parents though, are originally from the Philippines. I’m a very sincere person yet still very polite. I have a fashion-clothes addiction, which would probably be why I’m always broke. I love music and appreciate all styles. I enjoy singing and dancing, not that I’m looking into it professionally, because I’m not that good. Right now my biggest goal is to get into a California University. I’m setting goals and aiming for the stars. I have and older sister and younger brother making me the middle child, which can have its perks and downfalls. I love God and go to church every week. It helps me grow everyday to appreciate life even more.

Briana
Briana's Poem

Hi! My name is Briana Dacoscos, and I attend Moanalua High School as a sophomore. Also I'm in this program called Menemac, which is a program that deals with all kinds of media. The reason why I chose to be in this program is because now days many things deal with technology like computers and cameras.

And so this past quarter our theme was Coming of Age (COA) so basically it means growing up and experiencing new things, like for example at our age its been the transition from middle school to high school, getting our drivers permit, and much more. A pretty big COA in my life lately was just the past birthdays, because I'm 15 years old now and no longer a child. So, overall COA is basically the experience of newer things that come up in life in which you learn more responsibility, maturity and to be more independable.

Kristie
Kristie's Poem

Hello, my name is Kristie Nakamura; I'm 15 years old and will be 16 years old on February 2. My family includes my parents, my brother, my three dogs, and a sister on the way. And me too, of course. My hobbies are I like to go shopping, talk on the phone, playing on the computer, driving, and spending time with my family. In school I am in the MeneMAC program/ Broadcast Journalism and in yearbook (those are my two favorite classes).

A time for me for Coming of Age was when my parents put more responsibility in my hands by allowing to me get my permit and drive. I think this helped me because I am able to take on more responsibility and become more independent.

Melissa
Melissa's Poem

Hey Y'all! My name is Melissa Castillo. I'm currently a sophomore Mene Mac student here at Moanalua High School. I feel being in this program has made me fully committed and responsible. I'm a type of person who takes care of my own responsibilities such as doing my homework, chores, babysitting my nephew, etc...

Coming of Age to me means growing up into a young adult learning from the mistakes you make in life. I haven't really come of age because I just recently turned 15 years old, which means that I can apply for a part-time job and get a drivers permit. I have a long ways in life, and now as a former high school student I feel that there are many responsibilities that you have to take care of yourself and just be fully committed in what you do.

Liz
Liz's Poem

Hello there (: My name is Liz Campos and attend Moanalua High School as a sophomore. I love to play the piano, hang out with friends and family, and is basically up for fun. Can’t get enough of music, talking on the phone, and shopping. I guess I’m just your average American type of girl. Haha. I love my friends and family and spend lots of time with them. I think that “coming of age” is a very important part of your life, it’s a time where you learn many new life lessons. There are a lot of choices to make in life, having to do with many influences from others, but then it’s up to you to make the right choices to get through life. That’s the basically me and my perspective on “coming of age”.
