Thursday Morning, May 6, 2004, 1:00 am
Daniel Bumanglag and Natasia Gascon, our intrepid cybernauts sacrificed sleep and homework time to represent MoHS at the first ever MegaConference Junior, "a new project designed to give students in elementary and secondary schools around the world the opportunity to communicate, collaborate and contribute to each other’s learning in real time, using advanced multi-point video conferencing technology."

Students from Singapore opened the conference, sharing slides and iMovies from their school trips and projects!

Students from a school for the deaf engaged in an animated discussion about their vacation plans with a teacher from another location, using signing to trade questions and stories!

The Gators drum team, fifth graders from Michigan! It sure woke us up to hear their energetic drumming!

The team did two numbers, online! It was interesting to hear how the audio came across Internet 2

3:00 AM HST: MegaConference Veejay Nick conducts roll call. And Hawaii is ready!!! Natasia and Daniel (appropriately clad in Aloha shirt :) respond with loud "alohas" and are greeted with "ooohhh, Hawaii!" and "alohas" in return!

In a great interactive presentation, Smith Middle School asked issue oriented questions to their worldwide audience.

Participants were engaged in discussions about topics such as "family," "discirmination," "equality/inequity," and "role of women."

4:15 AM HST: Hawaii was very well represented in the discussion with Natasia and Daniel contributing their experiences with life and stereotypes in our multicultural island society,

In one of the exciting moments of the discussion, Smith voiced their questions in Spanish...

And students from Barcelona eagerly responded in Spanish to the question on the role of women in society!

4:43 AM HST: MegaConference Presenter MCU crashes and everyone waits anxiously for the system to be rebooted. In the presenter chat, we are notified that we are not transmitting video, so we begin to gnaw our nails on that count, too.
4:52 AM HST: MegaConference presenter MCU comes back up...we're back on line but still wondering whether anyone can see us.

One of our favorite presenters--the jazz bass player guy from New World Symphony!

Alaskan students performed traditional dances and even one on basketball and another on the Iditarod!

One of our morning crews...waking up to Megaconference!

More students...some who stayed up all night and others who woke early to joint the fun!

Our MeneMAC freshmen do "roll call" honors and end up winning us a prize--a videoconferencing unit! Way to go freshmen!

The Final Countdown Begins!!! As the hour neared 7:00 EDT (1:00 HST) the participants did one last roll call. Many had left for the day but a few remained. These pictures document that closing ceremony. Each site came on to say their goodbyes. Singing and cheers and laughter accompanied the farewells. And yet, no one wanted to leave. Megaconference organizers let us stay on for a few minutes, talking and basking in the warmth of our new friendships. MoHS appears at the left side of each of the screens, as the remote sites come up one by one to sign off.

And as we leave, with fond memories of this Megaconference experience, we would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all who made this possible. Arif Khan and the tech crew at OarNet, Jennifer MacDougall and all the other members of the Operations and Program committees...here in Hawaii, our MoHS Tech Team of Lance Kiyabu and Gerald Saki and our visionary principal Darrel Galera, our state network people, and all who have volunteered their expertise and patience to see us through this exciting journey!
