Hosts, Gerald Rojo II and Marisa Kiethanom, and Japanese translator Jesse Iaela, and the rest of the "chorus line" wave for the camera as we prepare for our "fifteen minutes of fame" in Megaconference Junior!

MOHS planned to share a video clip about the Hokulea and Hawaiian voyaging, the Hawaiian and Japanese words for ocean, our concerns for the ocean environment, and a Japanese folk song about voyaging on the ocean. We hoped to hear from our friends around the world about their own words, concerns, and music about our theme, "the sea around us."

Our presentation started with a video by Gerald and Bao Jun Lei, documenting the Hokulea and its role in renewing the hope and legacy of ancient Hawaiians through non-instrument navigation of early migration routes.

Gina Nakahara, teacher in the MOHS World Languages Learning Center holds up "cue cards" for her students as they prepare to sing, "Umi," a Japanese folk song describing the ocean and expressing the desire to travel over it.

After the group sang once, we displayed the words to the song for a truly international "sing along." The words were superimposed over pictures of the visit of our sister school, Hiroshima Kokutaiji Senior High in Japan.

In addition to the singing, we shared powerpoint slides designed by Ms. Nishite's Biology students. Their projects investigated ocean areas off Oahu's coastline and ways we can help to protect these environments.
