Teacher Professional Development Portfolio

"Teachers' daily experiences with students provide them with tremendous opportunities to understand and assess their own practices. Whereas teachers can learn some of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions embedded in teaching in pre-service and in-service educational programs, they can become effective teachers only if they fully understand learning from within. Such knowledge comes from a capacity to reflect upon and appreciate their own learning process and that of others."
Giselle O. Martin-Kniep, Capturing the Wisdom of Practice: Professional Portfolios for Educators, 1999

What are Teaching Portfolios?
Documentation of purposeful work, capturing a process that validates current expectations, addresses issues that affect one's practices and identifies goals to further one's professional development

  • A rich portrayal of teachers' work
  • A documentation of transformation among lesson planned to lesson as taught to lesson as learned
  • A documentation of the teachers' attempts to incorporate new knowledge and skills into their professional repertoires
  • A documentation of learning about curriculum, instruction, and assessments over time

There are different kinds of portfolios - for different purposes (achievement, evaluation, reflective, presentation). Moanalua High School teacher portfolios are developed within the context of the school's professional development goals and customized to meet the needs of the individual teachers. With this in mind, the development of the portfolios will evolve over the 3-year professional development cycle.
