Effective Transformation of Teaching and Learning Through Technology
2002 Moanalua Complex TLCF Grant
The Moanalua Complex will implement a TLCF grant beginning in January 2002 and continuing throughout the 2002-03 school year. The project is an extension of previous action research efforts such as the "Electronic Collaborative Educational Learning Laboratory (ECELL)", which involved complex schools on the use of technology as a stimulus for effective teaching and learning from 1997 through 2001. Through projects such as ECELL, the following was learned:
- Hawaii students of all ages, backgrounds, and ability levels are fully engaged and motivated when the use of best classroom practices are combined with the effective use of technology as a tool.
- Students from grade 1 to grade 12 can demonstrate higher level thinking skills through the use of culminating activities which incorporate the internet and web-based instructional tools and activities
- ESLL students can demonstrate increased learning, motivation, and communication gains when technology is effectively infused into the learning design
- Teachers can learn how to apply the use of best practices and technology (as demonstrated through performanced-based culminating tasks) when provided coherent training, teaming between pre-services and inservice teachers, technology rich learning environments, tech support, and administrative leadership.
The findings from the ECELL provide a foundation for meeting the goal of the TLCF program - to provide for the effective use of technology as a tool in all classrooms. The realistic achievement of the TLCF goals is hindered by the following problems:
- many school leaders are not trained in how to be leaders in a digital age,
- classroom teachers are overwhelmed by and cannot make sense of the enormous amount of information and resources that continue to expand exponentially each day,
- modern technology tools are not present in the daily classroom learning environment, and
- teachers must be provided effective professional development that is meaningful and teacher-centered.
The 2002 Moanalua Complex TLCF project will seek to achieve the following objectives:
- The development and implementation of professional development training in educational technology for school administrators and school curriculum leaders
- Providing an easy to use digital resource for teachers which supports standards-based learning and the effective use of technology
- Provide project teachers with a classroom that is technology rich with needed tools to increase higher level thinking, collaboration, and communication
- Utilize a professional development approach that is meaningful and centered on teacher needs
